If Nikon would add this one feature - batch conversions - to Nikon V/B/E it would greatly enhance this product. Unfortunately Nikon View/Browser/Editor doesn't offer batching so it's slow to work with and unsuited to working with large numbers of photos. In most cases the Nikon conversion will be much more faithful while the Picasa conversion will need tweaking and the Irfanview conversion will be a bit soft and flat. Try it for yourself: convert a NEF to a JPEG with *no* other edits in Nikon Editor, Picasa and Irfanview. Of all the freebie programs I've tried that can handle NEFs, it produces the best quality results. Nikon View/Browser/Editor is very good for some things so I still keep it around. And batch conversions are very quick (say, 100 or more NEFs to TIFFs, etc., without a hiccup as long as your computer has the system resources.) It can read just about any kind of image file and save to almost as many, including some that are rarely used now. It's capable of doing certain things Picasa can't, such as using many Photoshop compatible plug-ins. ![]() However it can save tweaked photos only to high resolution JPEGs - no TIFFs, etc.Īnother good freebie image handler is Irfanview (another freebie, altho' the author requests donations). Picasa can handle batching and sequential commands and does a better job with quickie tweaks. It's much quicker and more stable than PictureProject. The best comparable software I've tried is Picasa, which is free from Google. I've tried at least a dozen low end photo editors comparable to PP and only a couple were worth keeping. ![]()
